Election night is over, and the headlines are focused on who won. For government and legislative affairs teams, policy analysts, and the journalists who cover Congress, the harder question is who will be the new committee chairs and who will run the offices they follow. Over the next several months, new members will hire staffers, each party will choose its leaders, and committees will be rebuilt from the top down.

The federal election shake-up started before a single vote was counted, with 14 committee leaders already set to leave their posts, and the states face turnover of their own. Incoming governors are building transition teams and choosing who will lead state departments. Newly elected state legislators take their seats on schedules that vary by state, some within days of the election.

Each departure sets off a ripple effect. A new chair or ranking member usually brings a new staff director and new policy staffers. Committees can also be renamed, have their jurisdiction reshuffled, or be disbanded and re-formed. These are the changes that rarely make the front page once Election Day passes.

Leadership Connect tracks these changes in its Elections & Transition Tracker, which brings them into one place from election night through swearing-in. Here’s what the tracker does, how it can help your team, and where to find it.

What the tracker does from election night to swearing-in

Leadership Connect began processing results on election night, Tuesday, Nov. 3. The updates appear in the member, office, and committee profiles.

The Elections & Transition Tracker keeps ready-made lists of the people who matter after an election and updates them as changes happen, including these:

  • Newly Elected Members & Staff shows each new member, then adds their chief of staff, legislative director, and other staffers as offices hire them.
  • Committee Chairs & Ranking Members shows who will lead the committees on your issues.
  • Departing Members & Staff shows who is retiring, and where their staffers you already know land next.
  • Newly Elected State Legislators fills in state by state as results come in.

Once each party chooses its leaders, committee assignments start to arrive. Undecided races can hold up those assignments, so the timing can shift without warning. The Committee Chairs & Ranking Members list is updated as leaders are named.

When the 120th Congress is sworn in come January 2027, the Members of Congress list switches over to the new Congress, and a large batch of updates follows. The work doesn’t stop there: Senate office details won’t arrive until the new session, and local results for many mayors, city councils, and county executives continue into early 2027.

How the tracker helps your team

You can set alerts on the members, committees, and staffers you care about instead of piecing together changes from press releases, committee websites, and news alerts.

  • Get to new offices early. Some new members start hiring within days of the election. Armed with continually updated organizational charts and contact information, you can introduce your team to new chiefs of staff, legislative directors, and state lawmakers while their offices are still forming.
  • Keep the relationships you’ve built. By setting alerts for individuals likely to move, you can follow staffers departing offices to their next roles, whether in another office or at a federal agency.
  • Know who will handle your issue. See new committee leaders and their staffers as assignments are announced and brief them before the committee’s first hearing.
  • Catch the changes that get buried in the news. Alerts on the committees you follow flag renamings and shifted jurisdictions, and new select committees appear as they’re formed.

When sessions begin in January, your team will already know the new offices, the new committee staffers, and where your old contacts landed. You will be scheduling meetings, not still working out whom to call.
