Building Trust, Strategy, and Leadership on Capitol Hill

Madison Ferrie Congressional Spotlight Interview

This week, we spoke to Madison Ferrie, Communications Director for the Office of Representative Byron Donalds.

Can you outline your career journey and the key steps that led you to your current role as Communications Director?

I got to where I am today based on two pillars: a strong work ethic and strategic networking. I interned for two Congressional offices, one of which led to my current role. Shortly after, I transitioned to a full-time position at Fox News in Washington, D.C., all before graduating early. I have been fortunate thus far in my journey, and in getting to where I am now, the most important thing was a willingness to go above and beyond. It may not seem like it in the moment, but volunteering for tasks not necessarily assigned to you and all those long nights are key to advancing your career. The choices you make early on and the willingness you show in wanting to grow and help others are, in my opinion, the most important mindset to have when climbing the “corporate ladder.”

Which policy areas or legislative issues are you most passionate about, and how do you stay informed and engaged in those topics?

The policy area that I would say I am most passionate about is foreign policy, with a keen interest in defense and security policy and foreign economic policy. On my morning walk to work, I listen to a podcast summarizing the day’s global news. These events often serve as a catalyst that shapes our economic, military, and diplomatic strategies, so I always try to stay on top of listening to each episode every morning, no matter where I am or what I am doing. On my walk home, I switch to a history podcast that analyzes previous leaders’ foreign policy stances and how that shaped the world in which we live today. When you work a lot of hours, taking just a little bit of time out of your day for the things you enjoy and want to better educate yourself on is beneficial to overall work productivity and well-being.

In your role as Communications Director, effective leadership is essential for keeping the team aligned with messaging and communication goals. What strategies or techniques do you use to inspire and motivate your team, ensuring they remain focused on delivering the office’s objectives despite any obstacles?

In my current role, I have found that the best leadership is rooted in trust and mutual respect for one’s colleagues and their work. The office stays aligned on messaging and calm during crisis communications through strong professional bonds. By prioritizing and fostering trust in my team’s abilities, we streamline the overall workflow and overcome obstacles while continuing to expand and sharpen our skills together.

Mentorship is a key aspect of leadership. Could you provide an example of how you’ve supported the growth and development of your team members, helping them enhance their communication skills and advance their skill sets?

Whenever possible, I always give my colleagues a chance to learn and grow in their current role. When talking to my colleagues on Capitol Hill, whether that’s in my direct office, state delegation, or opposite political party, I do my best to lend a helping hand, whether that’s as simple as reading over their work, passing along contact information for a type of medium, or general advice. A good majority of people who work on Capitol Hill are in the early stages of their careers, so if someone conveys that they have an interest in communications, I do my best to give them a better understanding of what the job entails and opportunities to shadow my work. I was mentored by someone when I first arrived in D.C. two years ago, and it was very helpful in understanding how Capitol Hill operates, so I make it a point to always extend the mentorship that I was given to others.

Word association, what is the first word that comes to mind for each of these?

Networking: Opportunities

Writing Skills: Crucial

Working on the Hill: Rewarding
